The Joomla! Content Management System (CMS) Explained

Joomla is an extremely reliable and powerful open source Content Management System (CMS) written in PHP and utilising a MySQL database that is freely available to everyone. It is used in numerous applications from simple personal websites and blogs to large scale corporate applications.

This feature packed application is designed to be easily installed and most people have very little difficulty getting the software up and running straight out of the box. A number of web hosts are also known to offer fully automated installs that can be performed by complete novices. In these instances, the installation process takes seconds and you don’t need to know how set up MySQL databases configure file or directory permissions or any of the other complex tasks usually associated with installations.

Once you have Joomla installed and running, even users with limited technical experience should have little difficulty adding or editing content. One of the key features of Joomla is that anybody with basic word processing knowledge will be able to build, edit and manage their website via the simple web browser based interface.

Straight out of box, the software is an incredibly powerful application for managing and editing content, but for many the true power of Joomla is realised by the fact that there are literally hundreds of add-ons (or extensions as they are commonly known) that can be used to enhance your website functionality. Examples of some of the sophisticated add-ons available include: Image Galleries, Blogging Software, Banner Advertising Systems, eCommerce Integration, RSS Syndication, Calendar and Event Management, User Management, Guest Books, Forums, Dynamic Form Building Software, Multimedia, Newsletters and much more.

Many commercial organisations offer professional Joomla services including: Full Website Design & Hosting, Website Templates and Custom Software Programming.

The Joomla project is led and managed by a ‘Core Team’ and is further supported by thousands of developers all over the world creating exciting new extensions and add-ons. There is also an active support forum subscribed to by over 90,000 users. With Joomla, and the spirit of the Open Source Community the possibilities are endless.
